Total Solar Eclipse chasingI've been chasing total solar eclipses since 1999 - it is a fantastic way to see the world, and a total solar eclipse is a truly awe-inspiring experience. See the ecliptomaniacs web site for more. Bus CrashOn Valentine's day, 14 February 2000, a driver for Dublin Bus was taking a double-decker bus from Bray to fulfill a private contract. He was a regular driver of single-decker busses around Bray. There are two ways of getting from the bus depot in Bray to the main Dublin road. The first way is rather circuitous, and takes the driver through some of Bray's busiest streets. The second way, which is the way that the driver took his bus, is faster, but involves going under a slightly low bridge, which makes this route unsuitable for large vehicles. It is OK if one is driving a single-decker bus, which our unfortunate driver normally drove. But this day, he was driving a double-decker. So, what do you get when a mutable Dublin Bus meets an immovable DART bridge? Irish County TripointsSo, what is a county tripoint? It is a place where three (or more) counties meet at a single point. In the spirit of the Degree Confluence project and the Corner Corner, I would like to invite people to visit the Irish county tripoints and take photographs. I kicked this project off myself on 18 Feb 2001 with a visit to the place where Dublin, Kildare and Meath meet at a single point. Fun with a GPSGPS receivers are good for more than just making sure you don't get lost on city streets. If you have a portable GPS receiver, check out the Degree Confluence project and the GPS cache hunt. |
